The Department of English offers the following information
in an effort to discourage plagiarism: "To
use another person's ideas or expressions in your
writing without acknowledging the source is to plagiarize"
(MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers).
Entrants should read Section 2.1 on plagiarism in
the MLA Handbook (available in the college
bookstore and in the Writing and Reading Center). One major source of unintentional plagiarism stems from the use of an
indirect source. The Modern Language Association says
that "If what you quote or paraphrase is itself
a quotation put the abbreviation qtd.
in ("quoted in ") before the indirect source you
cite in your parenthetical reference (MLA Handbook).
